Thing # 23

This is a great way to learn and earn. Considering that we're having staffing issues I propose more online CEU enhanced courses. I found Flickr to be less intimidating that I had thought it to be. I believe Del.icio.us to be a very practical site that can be accessed from anywhere. Web 2.0 was a great look at libraries of the future but as with many futuristic predictions other technologies will be born and those that were imagined will vanish. Probably my least favorite and most frustrating was #18 google.docs. If there is another online learning tool devised like this I will be delighted to participate.

Thing #22

22 and counting! I went to our website and put
American Outrage by Tim Green
on hold and wanted to download I, Alex Cross by Patterson but realized that I'll have to do that from my home computer. I also reservedDavid Sedaris's Live at Carnegie Hall in audio format.

Thing # 21

I really enjoy NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me which is live on Saturday afternoons. This introduction to podcasts will be wonderful so I won't have to miss an episode since I've learned how to down load it to my computer or mp3 should I learn how to use my mp3 player.

Thing # 20

Hard to resist, eh?

Thing # 19

This Web 2.0 could have been overwhelming but I started with the short list and found a great real estate site. Zillow is very user friendly for anyone in the market to sell, rent, or buy. One can post a rental by owner or sale by owner. There is a small fee for featured listings on the site which receives a prominent place for 180 days. Recent sales and foreclosures in the are easy to find. The help topics are comprehensive containing topics such as the housing market in your area, mortgage rates, refinancing information and local real estate agents. This would be very helpful for customers moving into the area or looking for housing elsewhere.

Thing # 18 Copy of index card template avery 5388 - Google Docs

For some reason I designed this very arresting doc HOWEVER it no longer works. It also allowed anyone into my personal email. Couldn't have that now. I'll try again later.

Thing # 17 Sand box wiki

Tried and tried but could not play in the sandbox. The most recent post I found when I Googled Maryland Libraries Wiki was a post on 8/2007 from a lucky person who indicated that he actually posted his blog. It was there at one time but appears to not be a happening link.

Thing # 16

I usually have reservations about using Wikipedia as my sole answer to a question but sometimes that's the only resource that has some obscure person or fact. Everything I thought I knew made me shy away from possible unsupported information. Learning about Wikis gave me a fresh insight into the process. I found www.webjunction.org particularly informative with good ideas for libraries. I liked their idea of making the public think "library" first when wanting to find community information on events in the area, or reviews by the public on books, movies, or even reviews on business services. The more the public thinks to go to the library as a first stop for information the more valuable we become. And we need all the value we can get.

Thing # 15

I was fascinated by the ideas of Dr. Wendy Schultz - up to a point. I got "it" up to Library 3.0 but then she lost me at Library 4.0. Way over my head. Anyway I believe that libraries are communities. I see it everyday when I greet customers who have come to rely on my service, I am part of their community even though I don't physically live there. We actually are participating in Library 2.0; we teach customers how to use our online databases, our downloadable books/music/films. Our library provides Wifi which 10 years ago would have been considered futuristic. We will continue to be the library tour guides in the future but that's what we always have been only our degrees call us librarians.

Thing # 14

The link to the technical tour was not working so I just went to the what's popular feature and found:
Technoraati's Popular section is currently unavailable. Popular features will return in the near future.
So I did a seek and find and ran a blog check on the tag Sustainable Farming and found 88 blogs but 24 posts. What I did find interesting were the number of journalist blogs that appeared. Ezra Klein from the Washington Post was listed as was Paul Krugman from the NYTimes. I liked the home page layout - news, drop down menu categories, good labeling. Since the popular section was unavailable I looked at the Top 100 Blogs and was happy to see some familiar faces - The Daily Beast and The Onion plus new ones waiting to be explored.

Thing #13

I felt that Del.icio.us is helpful for being able to have your favorites at your fingertips no matter where where. I found the layout stark and not particularly inviting. As noted before the recommended video to get you started was not working. It took a bit of hunt and peck but I did find a link through "Jaquin's" blog to a multitude of other sites. I would probably only use it for my favorite websites but wouldn't particularly be interested in having others access it. If one is looking for sites on particular subjects it could be helpful especially when helping customers.

Thing #12

I remain karienthelibrarian on rollyo. I chose politics and travel. It's handy to keep favorite sites both personally and professionally.

Thing #11

http://www.librarything.com/home/kklogsdon

It was a pleasure to be reaquainted with Library Thing. I had previously created an account for another assignment but had forgotten about it so today I added 6 more of my favorite titles. I found that it jogged my memory as to what I had read and enjoyed. I will continue using this for future additions. My brain could use little reminders now and again.

Thing #10

Yeah, Karienthelibrarian in the avatar flesh. I found this exercise to be fun but didn't know what to do with the Generator blog and found that FD Toys could be good if there was more time.

Thing #9

merlin Maryland's Essential Resource for Library Information Networks - Home is now a part of my blog and life. It will help with finding online training to complete my need of 90 CEU hours by December. I could not find the Gaming, Avatars and Virtual Worlds link in order to "have some fun" I have spent waaay too much time searching. I tried Feedster (which was unavailable), Topix., Syndic8.com (too techie for moi) and Technorati which held promise. Bloglines was the easies for me to understand and navigate. It is easy to add to and access.

Thing #8

http://www.bloglines.com/myblogs is now established and I have added news sources, politics as well as a fun site called Boing Boing which had a video of Margaret Thatcher doing the dead parrot sketch from Monty Python. Bloglines is not w/o it commercial side. You can go to Ticketmaster, hotwire, and find hotel deals as well. I just learned that the National Geographic site is unavailable and CNN posted this warning: Beware Facebook 'hilarious video' scam
By Pete Cashmore, Mashable May 31, 2010 10:57 a.m. EDT. Useful stuff, this.

Thing #7

I received a picture of my grandson sent by my son who downloaded this app from the Smithsonian. Check this out, http://humanorigins.si.edu/resources/multimedia/mobile-apps. The website converts pictures of people into what they would have looked like as Neanderthals. I tried to add his cute little face here but couldn't figure out how to do it.

Thing #6

Took a bit of searching to get the idea of what the App format is all about. However I found a fabulous idea called "imapflickr.com" You can upload holiday photos and place them below the map of vacation area. As the cursor goes over the map a picture is hightlighted which shows where the picture was taken. There is a handy step-by-step narrated video to get you started.

Thing #5

Flickr is bottomless. I created a Flickr account so will be able to explore this fancy tool in depth. I uploaded this picture with the photo upload feature but will return and check out the blogging tool. It will take a bit of time to get the hang of it. Should be most useful for the bazillions of pictures my husband and I take.

Thing #2 Keeping up with technology shold be constant and mind challenging. I am looking forward to seeing what's out there so I won't be so hesitant to explore. Armed with my goals and new habits I'll look forward to becoming more technology savvy.

The Beginning

It's getting close to the end of Bloggosville, so I must hurry, hurry and get this to Kate so I won't be late. Hats off to all who have finished their 23 Things.
